The all weather Atal Tunnel will not only facilitate tourism and millitary movements but will also make life easier for the locals living there. Most of the people of Lahual valley used to shift to Manali during the winters to escape from the threats of avalnche that damaged their houses. The cold desert of Lahaul Spiti in Himachal Pradesh has the toughest terrain under very harsh weather. Although in winter season people still may have to move to Manali but inhabitants expect that this tunnel will put an end to the hardships they have been facing in the cold desertfor years. The tunnel is expected to change the course of development in terms education, health and overall economy with its mainstreaming. The 14000 feet high Kunzum Pass separates Lahaul and Spiti valley. The Atal Tunnel is te longest highway tunnel in the world which connects Manali to Lahual-Spiti valley. It is built by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and is 9.02 km long. The tunnel reduces travel time between Manali and Leh by 4-5 hours and distance by 46 Km.
