Why are States opting for legislation on ‘freedom of religion’?

The Special Marriage Act of 1954 was passed for facilitating marriage of couples following different religons and preferring civil wedding. But, it was found that several issues were arising at the time of registration of such marriages. Thus, a section of these couples opted to settle for marriage under anyone of their’s personal law while others opted for religious conversion. This editorial explains the features of the SMA, mentions the hurdles confronted by couples and alternatives for registration of inter-faith marriages.
